Wiring an import 5 way switch

Here’s how to wire a 5-way switch in a Stratocaster guitar:

  1. Gather all necessary tools and materials, including wire strippers, a soldering iron, and a 5-way switch.
  2. Locate the 5-way switch on your Stratocaster’s pickguard.
  3. Unsolder the wires from the old switch and remove it from the pickguard.
  4. Carefully strip the ends of each wire.
  5. Solder one end of a white wire to the top right lug of the 5-way switch.
  6. Solder one end of a green wire to the top left lug of the 5-way switch.
  7. Solder one end of a black wire to the bottom right lug of the 5-way switch.
  8. Solder one end of a red wire to the bottom left lug of the 5-way switch.
  9. Connect the other end of the white wire to the volume control’s input lug.
  10. Connect the other end of the green wire to the neck pickup’s positive lug.
  11. Connect the other end of the black wire to the middle pickup’s positive lug.
  12. Connect the other end of the red wire to the bridge pickup’s positive lug.
  13. Test the switch to ensure that it’s functioning correctly.

Note: The wiring process for a Stratocaster can vary depending on the specific model.

Here is a basic import 5-way Switch Wiring

Difference between Import 5 way switch and regular US switch on a Stratocaster

The main difference between an import 5-way switch and a regular US switch on a Stratocaster guitar is the quality and reliability of the switch. Import switches are typically lower in cost, but they may not perform as well as a US-made switch.

The US-made switches are known for their durability and consistency, while import switches may have more variability in their performance. US-made switches may also have better manufacturing tolerances, which can lead to a smoother and more precise operation.

In terms of wiring, both import and US switches will typically work with a Stratocaster, but you may need to make slight modifications to the wiring process depending on the specific switch.

When it comes to choosing between the two, it ultimately depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you’re looking for a high-quality, reliable switch, a US-made switch may be the better choice. However, if you’re working on a budget or don’t mind a potentially lower quality switch, an import switch may be a good option.
